The other night was an unusual night for my family, in that being, my husband was away for the night enjoying a basketball game with some friends. What’s unusual about that for me in my family is that it is rare my husband is ever away. He works and plays from home. So my twin boys are used to him always being around. Our usual routine for the evening is, I’ll do dinner, we eat and hang out for awhile. Then when it’s time, my husband and I get the kids ready for bed, then I give kisses and off to clean up duty on the house while my husband does story time. This has to be one of my boys favorite times of the day. They love how he interacts with them. If he’s not reading from a book, he’s making up some crazy, action filled story. My husband has a way of telling stories. He acts everything out whether that be rolling on the ground or jumping from the beds. Every story is action packed and has many different characters and strange voices that go along with those characters. A lot goes into story time. It’s filled with lots of laughs and fun. So you can see why my boys look forward to this time with their Dad every night. I love that my husband does such a wonderful job with his stories and enjoys this time with his boys.

So this one rare night when my husband was going to be away for an evening I was a little nervous to tell my boys I was going to be doing story time instead. Especially since in the past they have told me my stories aren’t as funny as Daddies. Which hurts a little, cause I do try. After we finished with dinner, I told my boys to clean up their dishes and head up to bed. They gave me a sigh and said, “but what about Dad and our story.” I explained once again that Dad was gone for the evening and I would be doing a “really cool story.” They sighed again and said, “o.k.” Not the reaction I was looking for, but was willing to take. It’s much better than a tantrum or whine fest. Off we went, they brushed their teeth and got into their pajamas. As we were walking towards their beds one of them went and got a frisbie that was left in their room and two markers and set them in the middle of the room. He then explained to his brother, “now you play music, while I dance with Mom.” He then told me to get down on my knees, while he put one arm around my back and held my hand out with his other hand. He said, “Mom, let’s dance.” We danced while his brother played the frisbee drums. We danced around for a while then he dipped me, grabbed my face and gave me a kiss. I was very surprised at the whole thing. First that they came up with this on their own and second, where in the world did they get this idea? As we were dancing, my little drummer boy then got up and said, “it’s my turn to dance with Mom.” They switched rolls, the music of the drums continued, and the swaying, the dips and the kisses continued. I probably danced with my boys about 10 times each. It’s one of those moments when you just want to freeze time. Especially since they are 4 years old and all they ever want to do is wrestle, race, and play video games. So the fact that they would come up with something I would actually love and enjoy doing with them, was truly amazing. I thought to my self, “this is one of those moments that makes Motherhood all worth it.” It meant so much to me that my four year old twin boys just came up with this all on their own. I didn’t even have to ask for this. At one point I said, “what about story time.” To which they replied, “no Mom, we want to dance with you, this is our favorite.” It was like someone was feeding them lines from a script. So we danced and danced. After awhile, I said to them that it was getting to be time for bed and that we should have one last dance, the three of us together. It was so fun and so perfect. Afterwards I put them to bed and read them a story then as I tucked them in and gave them kisses, they both told me how much fun they had and then they said they loved me so much. I told them how much I loved them and what I wonderful night I had with them. Then I wished them a good night and as I was walking out the door, one of my boys yelled, “oh and Mom, you look so cute.” I smiled, and said, “Thank you sweet heart.” Then I thought, ‘they just made my night and now he just topped it.’

I went downstairs, finished cleaning up, turned on my shows and waited for my husband to come home. I couldn’t wait to tell him what an awesome night I had with our boys. He walked in, sat down next to me and asked how my night went. I turned to him with a huge grin, and said, “I love you, but maybe you should leave more often.” I then explained my night with the boys. I told my husband it’s one of those nights I will always treasure. Then I asked him, where did he think they were getting all these smooth moves from. He said, “like father, like son.” Yeah right, I thought, but I’ll take it. As a Mother it was definetly a dream night with my boys.
